SUCCESS CRITERIA IN CORNEAL TATTOOING

Color and pigment selection play a crucial role in corneal tattooing. Eye colors can vary in different shades of brown, green, and blue. Over the past four years, we have performed corneal tattooing on more than 250 patients, tailoring different pigment shades, application durations, and techniques for each case. In our clinic, we ensure that the tattooed eye color matches the natural shade and tone of the patient’s other eye as closely as possible.

Fading is a common occurrence in all tattoo applications, and the long-term success of corneal tattooing is directly related to minimal color fading. Our primary goal is to perform the procedure without penetrating the cornea or causing damage to the eye, achieving the most suitable color and size for the patient’s other eye. Excessive fading is often caused by a lack of experience, improper pigment selection, incorrect application techniques, and insufficient penetration of the pigment into the corneal stroma. Patients who experience minimal fading in the first months tend to have higher satisfaction rates and better outcomes. Therefore, determining the right pigment, application duration, and technique is essential for achieving the best results in corneal tattooing.

Success Criteria in Corneal Tattooing

  1. Photos taken immediately after the procedure and within the first week do not reflect the final result. The color and saturation take time to stabilize.
  2. Fading is most significant in the first few months. In procedures performed by experienced doctors, fading is significantly reduced after the second month.
  3. If the pigment is not applied deeply enough into the cornea, the initial result may appear successful, but by the end of the first month, the eye may return to its original appearance.
  4. For an accurate assessment of success, photos should be taken at least in the second month and, preferably, after one year.
  5. Corneal tattooing should only be performed by an experienced specialist, preferably a cornea expert.
  6. Patients should request at least one-year follow-up results and photos from their doctor before deciding on the procedure.

When performed by experienced professionals, corneal tattooing can be a highly effective and long-lasting solution for eye aesthetics and functionality. Therefore, the expertise of the doctor and the quality of the pigment used are the most critical factors in determining success.
